Our Story

A Family Affair

The Mountain Resort in Bhutan’s Bumthang highlands has come a long way without losing its roots. Our family-run resort was started by a man of exceptional kindness, who dreamed of a place that would be gracious, spacious, and rooted in the genuine traditions of Bhutanese hospitality.

;

Over the years, it has fulfilled its promise of welcoming all our guests with the generous spirit of its founder. Although he is no longer with us, his spirit is in every detail of the property. And while we miss his presence we know he is with us in every breath of this place.

Ashi, the matriarch of the family, still runs the kitchen with a light touch and with grace and beauty while the children take care of various responsibilities from reservations to front of house to the restaurant and spa and the most beautiful rooftop hot stone baths (the only one of its kind in Bhutan).

This is a big-hearted place brimming with the love of our dearly beloved family elder, and humming with the heart and the passion that is the legacy he left to his children. It is a place of light, a place of strength, of honesty, integrity, and the highest aspects of the cherished Bhutanese way of life.

The Best of Regional Cuisine

Hearty buckwheat pancakes slathered with coveted Bumthang honey or wild strawberry jam; dark noodles, heavy with fiber and zero-preservatives, regional red rice,  swiss-variety potatoes famous in the region and the heavenly cheeses of Bumthang are happy jump off points for daily culinary adventures into the flavor profiles of Bhutan’s beloved central region.

;

Make a flavorsome foray into the food culture of Bhutan with our interesting series of regional favorites. Try our hearty buckwheat pancakes with hand-gathered honey from local farms or puta, the fibre-rich noodles of the Jakar Valley. For those with adventurous palates, the mushroom infused twist on the fiery national dish, Ema Datsi, is accompanied with red rice and jambuley gnocchi. From fresh farm-sourced local cheese, seasonal fruits and vegetables, lean meat and freshwater fish, we offer healthy, hearty and nutritious meals that are sure to please. Also, if you’re lucky, you may be the lucky beneficiary of Ashi’s occasional and much-loved “Bumthang Pizza” made from scratch with the gooey goodness of ripe Gouda with fresh sprigs of cilantro and chili-flakes.

PRAISE: What our Guests Say

We spent three nights here. The hotel is only about a 15 minute walk from town. Our room was large and had a nice view. The bed was very comfortable. The bathrooms are large also, with a separated shower area and a separate tub. There was lots of counter space for toiletries.

PRAISE: What our Guests Say

Buddhist scholar and author Francoise

I have been a regular over 20 years at this hotel and it is one of the best in Bhutan in its categories: family owned, kind hospitality, delicious food, good wifi, nice garden, helpful staff. It is just like being in a cocoon… in the beautiful Bumthang valley.

PRAISE: What our Guests Say

This is a sweet, cozy place that does feel like a mountain lodge – including the chilly rooms, but the wood-burning stoves are a wonderful addition. The rooms are simple, clean and comfortable. The lighting is a bit dim. The staff are incredibly attentive and pleasant, quick to respond to requests. The location is in the country, but a pleasant walk into the small town. It’s quite quiet at night, so sleeping is easy!
